About Our Silk

Why Silk?

There are many products marketed as "silky" or "satin" but, often times, they are actually polyester (a type of plastic). Satin refers to a type of weave, not a type of fiber. Silk is a natural fiber, breathable, hypoallergenic, and temperature regulating. This makes it a great all-season fabric.

About Our Silk

Grade: Silk is graded on things like fiber length, impurities, and color. The grades are 1-6 (6 being the highest) and A, B, and C (A being the highest). Our products are made from 100% Grade 6A Mulberry Silk which is the highest quality silk available.

Density: Silk density is measured in "momme" (mm). Most silk wild rags are 12-14 mm; ours are 19 mm. 19 momme silk is lightweight enough to make beautiful garments and scarves, but strong enough to withstand some serious use. Our pillowcases are made from 22 momme silk, which is delicate enough to be extremely soft and luxurious against the skin and hair, but strong enough to withstand normal wear and tear from sleeping.

Hems: The hems on our wild rags are machine stitched with poly thread, which makes them incredibly durable. Many wild rags have hand-rolled hems which aren't as strong and durable. Our clean, crisp poly hems are sure to pass the test.

About Our Dyeing Process

Our silk products are hand-dyed in small batches with care. Every piece will have slight variations (even in the same batch) meaning that every hand-dyed item from us is one-of-a-kind. We take great care to treat our silk with the utmost care during every step of the process from preparation, to dyeing, washing, steaming, and packaging.

How We Compare

From the high quality of our silk, to our durable machine-stitched hems, and, finally, the beautiful hand-dyed designs of our scarves, we are confident that once you try an Amber Waves silk product, you'll be a customer for life.
